The original structure posed significant challenges. It was narrow, lacked natural light, and was heavily reliant on artificial lighting. However, L and M Design Lab saw potential in this structure. They kept the entire structure intact and created an atrium that ran vertically through three stories. This ingenious design ensured that all classrooms received natural light from both sides. The columns and beams were transformed into trees and bridges, creating a woodland-like atmosphere.
The unique properties of this design lie in its ability to mimic the experience of wandering in the woods. The continuous stairs and slides spiral up around the "trees", connecting and activating spaces. "Tree houses" provide private spaces for children to read and do handwork. This design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space but also serves a functional purpose, catering to the needs of children aged 2-6.
The realization of this design involved a series of structure studies that optimized the construction logic of the atrium. The technical specifications of the design are as follows: Width 50000 mm x Depth 24000 mm x Height 15000 mm. The design process took place from December 2018 to July 2019.
Despite the challenges posed by the land policy in China, the owner and his wife, who are outstanding preschool educators, were determined to establish a world-leading kindergarten. They were able to turn a building with poor sunlight into the best kindergarten in South China. This achievement is a testament to the power of innovative design and the impact it can have on education and lifestyle.
In conclusion, "Wandering in the Woods" is a testament to the transformative power of design. L and M Design Lab has shown that with creativity and innovation, even the most challenging spaces can be turned into vibrant, functional, and engaging environments. This design serves as an inspiration for architects and designers worldwide, demonstrating that limitations can indeed be the birthplace of innovation.
